Caterpillars of the ‘oak processionary’ moth have proven to be an annoyance and at times a hazard to humans. Their long, prickly bristles carry a toxin which can cause irritation of the skin and asthma. Even after the moth’s lifetime, these hairs can spread via plants and water posing a health threat for several seasons. The caterpillars are present from May to July and have to be removed if spotted. When located in your own trees, you are responsible for their removal.
